Bangladesh measles death toll nears 800

Four more children have reported dead from measles-like symptoms across Bangladesh over the past 24 hours. This brings the total death toll from confirmed and suspected cases near 800.

Meanwhile, 1,008 new suspected cases and confirmed infections were detected, said Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Tuesday, July 21.

According to the official health bulletin, 702 children have died nationwide with symptoms consistent with measles since March 15.

When combined with the 95 lab-confirmed measles fatalities recorded during the same timeframe, the total national death toll now stands at 797.

The DGHS reported 130 new laboratory-confirmed cases and 878 cases showing measles symptoms over the last 24 hours, while 1,218 children were newly admitted to hospitals across the country, against 879 hospital discharges.

Overall cumulative data since March 15 shows that suspected measles cases have reached 119,448, with 14,708 cases officially confirmed through laboratory testing.

A total of 102,244 patients have required hospital admission since the outbreak began, of whom 98,411 children have recovered and returned home following treatment.
