Man gets life term for killing wife in Sirajganj

A Sirajganj court on Thursday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his wife in Sirajganj’s Raiganj upazila in 2023.

The court also fined the convict Tk 30,000, in default of which he will have to serve one more year in jail.

The convict, Fazal Sarkar, son of late Chabader Ali of Panaigati village in Raiganj upazila, was present in the courtroom when the verdict was pronounced.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Nazrul Islam of Sirajganj delivered the judgment on Thursday afternoon, said Assistant Public Prosecutor Hamidul Islam Dulal.

According to the prosecution, Fazal Sarkar married Nur Mahal of Basuria village in the same upazila. The couple had long been in marital conflict and eventually divorced in 2021. However, they remarried in February 2023 and resumed living together.

On June 26, 2023, police recovered the hanging body of Nur Mahal from a eucalyptus tree near Laxmi Khola Bridge in the area.

Following the incident, the victim’s brother Yakub Hossain filed a case with the concerned police station accusing Fazal Sarkar.

After completing the investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against the accused.

After examining witnesses and reviewing the evidence, the court found the accused guilty and delivered the verdict, the prosecutor added.
