The government has launched a pilot program offering free high-speed Starlink satellite internet on select intercity trains, marking the first time the technology has been applied on a moving train in the country.

Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) announced the initiative on Saturday, saying the service went live on Friday on three popular VIP intercity routes — Paryatak Express, Upoban Express, and Bonolata Express.

The pilot was launched under the direction of Rehan Asif Asad, adviser to the Prime Minister on Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology as well as Science and Technology. Bangladesh Railway is collaborating with BSCL on the project. The adviser personally observed the trial operations, the company said.

The Starlink-based free WiFi service allows passengers to access high-speed internet while traveling. Railway authorities said that if the pilot proves successful, the service will be permanently rolled out on other nonstop and high-demand intercity trains across the country.

Officials noted that the connectivity would enable passengers to engage in freelancing, attend online classes, or complete office work while on board, significantly enhancing productivity during travel.
