13 injured as under-construction police station’s roof collapses in Jamalpur

At least 13 workers were injured after a portion of the roof of an under-construction police station building collapsed in Jamalpur’s Islampur upazila on Monday afternoon.

The injured were identified as Aminul Islam, Shafiqul, Saiful, Biplob Mia, Lal Chan and Babul Mia, all residents of Sadhurpur Kandapara village in Melandah upazila.

According to locals, the incident occurred shortly after the roof had been freshly cast when a section of the structure suddenly gave way, trapping several workers underneath.

They were first taken to Islampur Upazila Health Complex for treatment. Doctors later referred five of the injured to Jamalpur General Hospital, as their condition was reported to be serious.

Assistant Executive Engineer Osman Gani, who was supervising the construction work, said there had been negligence in ensuring the proper quality and safety of the shuttering used during roof casting.

No representatives of the contracting firm SA Enterprise were found at the site immediately after the incident.

Attempts to contact Islampur Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Abdul Kayum Gazi for comments were unsuccessful.
