Bangladesh junior have launched their SAFF U-20 Championship title defence in commanding fashion, securing a 2?0 win against Pakistan in their opening group match at the National Stadium, Male on Tuesday.

United States-based striker Ronan Sullivan made an instant impact, netting both goals on his tournament debut to become the standout performer.

From the first whistle, Bangladesh dominated possession and territorial play, pressing Pakistan relentlessly. Despite the attacking dominance, the first half ended goalless due to some disjointed midfield play and a lack of precise passing in the final third. Early opportunities included a 4th minute header from a Murshid Ali cross that narrowly went over the bar, and a 16th-minute chance following a cross from Nazmul Faisal, which was cleared by the Pakistani defence. In the 31st minute, Mohammad Manik's powerful strike also failed to find the target.

The second half saw a more cohesive Bangladesh side, and the breakthrough came in the 53rd minute when Sullivan's superb free-kick from nearly 30 yards found the net. Bangladesh nearly doubled their lead in the 63rd minute, but Murshid Ali's effort struck the crossbar.

However, four minutes later, Sullivan scored his second goal, capitalising on a perfect cross from Sheikh Songram, effectively sealing the 2-0 win.

Following this opening triumph, Bangladesh will face regional opponent Indian on 28 March in the final group match. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals, with the final scheduled for 3 April.
This win says that Bangladesh boys are determined to defend their crown and maintain dominance at the regional level. The next match will say more.
