No update on Tarique Rahman’s India visit, says Jaiswal

India has no fresh information on Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s proposed visit to India, said Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal Tuesday.

Jaiswal made the remarks at the ministry’s fortnightly media briefing in response to questions about which heads of government and state would attend the upcoming BRICS summit in New Delhi, including whether Bangladesh’s prime minister would participate.

“I don’t have any updated information."

The 18th BRICS Summit is scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 12-13. Leaders from the 11 member states, alongwith heads of government and state from invited countries, are expected to attend.

India has invited Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to participate in the BRICS summit’s outreach session in his capacity as the current chair of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).

Following the BNP’s landslide victory in Bangladesh’s national election in February and the formation of a new government, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government had also invited Rahman for a bilateral visit to India.

However, Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir recently said there was no possibility of Tarique Rahman visiting India before his planned trip to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly.
