Police recovered the hanging body of a security guard from the rooftop of a three-storey building at Nitaiganj wholesale business area in Narayanganj city on Friday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Md Ariful Islam, also known as Masum, 38, a resident of Barakathi area in Uzirpur upazila of Barishal district. He had been living with his family on the second floor of the building and worked as a security guard at a nearby shopping complex.

According to sources, the body was found hanging from a television cable wire on the rooftop of the building located on old BK Road in Dalpatti.

Police recovered the body and sent it to Narayanganj General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Ariful’s wife, Nipa Khanam, said he had a history of drug addiction and had previously attempted suicide.

She added that the couple had been experiencing marital discord for the past four months and he had been distant in recent days.

Family members said Ariful went to work on Thursday night and returned home briefly a couple of times before leaving again.

Later on Friday noon, his wife went to the rooftop to dry clothes and discovered his hanging body, prompting local residents to alert police.

However, the deceased’s mother, Ruma Begum, alleged foul play, claiming her son was murdered following family disputes. She accused her daughter-in-law of being involved in the incident.

Narayanganj Sadar Police Station sub-inspector (SI) Al Mamun said that it appears to be a case of suicide, but the exact cause of death will be confirmed after receiving the autopsy report.”

Further investigation is underway, added the OC.
