A Dhaka court on Wednesday began the trial of former Shariatpur MP and Awami League Organising Secretary BM Mozammel Haque in a Tk 2.5 million extortion case.
Judge Mahamuda Akter of 14th Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court framed charges and set April 5 for the verdict.
Mozammel was produced before the court, where his lawyer informed the judge that the parties had reached a settlement.
In his deposition, the complainant, Khalilur Rahman, declared the accused innocent and stated that he had no objection to his acquittal.
According to the case details, Mozammel allegedly demanded Tk 2.5 million from the businessman ahead of 2014 national election, threatening abduction if the money was not paid. He is also accused of subsequently harassing the complainant and forcing him to shut down his business.
The case was filed on August 24, 2024.
Mozammel was arrested by Detective Branch (DB) police from Niketan on October 5 last year and has remained in custody since then.
