CHATMOHAR, PABNA, Apr 6: Like elsewhere in the country, Christians in Chatmohar Upazila of Pabna observed Easter Sunday yesterday with due religious fervor and solemnity. The day, one of the most significant festivals of the Christian community, commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Father Shaibal Rosario, parish priest of Mathurapur mission, said Easter marks the triumph of Jesus over death and sin. He recalled that on Good Friday, Jesus was crucified unjustly by the ruling Jewish authorities to preserve their superstitious order. On the third day, Sunday, he rose from the dead, which Christians celebrate as Easter Sunday or Resurrection Sunday.
Easter is observed on the Sunday following the first full moon after March 21. The date is determined by calculations across Gregorian, Julian, and other calendars, usually falling between April 4 and May 8. This year, Easter was celebrated on April 5.
The day carries immense significance for Christians, as it follows 40 days of fasting and penance known as Lent. Easter Sunday brings joy and renewal, symbolizing hope and salvation.
On Sunday morning, Christians in Mathurapur, Failzana, Haripur, and 15 villages of Chatmohar municipality attended prayers at Catholic and Baptist churches. The services began with early morning worship, followed by choir hymns, Bible readings, and blessings. Special prayers were offered for the welfare of the nation and its people.
Religious leaders and followers participated in the ceremonies, which were marked by devotion and spiritual reflection. The community emphasized that Easter is not only a celebration of faith but also a reminder of sacrifice, forgiveness, and unity.
