A court in Dhaka on Tuesday sent former Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury to jail rejecting his remand and bail petitions in a case related to the anti-discrimination movement in the capital's Lalbagh area.

Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman issued the order.

Earlier this morning, the case investigation officer DB inspector Mohsin Uddin submitted an application seeking a two-day remand for questioning. Meanwhile, lawyer Moksedul Hasan Mandal pleaded for her bail.

But the court rejected both petitions and sent the former speaker to jail, PP Omar Faruq confirmed.

DB officials detained Dr Shirin Sharmin from a relative's residence on Road 8/A at Dhanmondi in the capital approximately 4:30AM on Tuesday. She was later taken to the DB office, where she is currently being questioned.
