Govt working to expand internet access, simplify investment procedures: ICT minister

Posts, Telecommunications and ICT Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam on Saturday said the government is working to ensure internet access for all while also simplifying investment procedures to accelerate digital and infrastructure development across the country.

Speaking at a views-exchange meeting titled “Internet for all” held at the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) office in Cox’s Bazar, the minister stressed the need for coordinated efforts to provide uninterrupted and affordable internet services nationwide.

“Government is working tirelessly to ensure internet access for all. At the same time, we are simplifying investment procedures and improving infrastructure to attract both local and foreign investors,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of connectivity, minister underscored the role of uninterrupted internet services in ensuring security in coastal and fisheries sectors.

He emphasised the need for satellite-based internet to support cyclone warnings, prevent piracy and facilitate emergency communication for fishermen at sea.

Faqir Mahbub said the government is expanding modern digital services, particularly in tourism-dependent regions like Cox’s Bazar, noting that free Wi-Fi has already been introduced at airports and railway stations.

He also outlined plans to extend internet access up to upazila level and promote skill development in freelancing and artificial intelligence (AI), aiming to bring technology closer to people.

Prime Minister’s Adviser Rehan Asif Asad, who attended the event as a special guest, said steps have been taken to improve telecommunication services, including addressing delays in services provided by Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL).

He added that initiatives are underway to expand free Wi-Fi coverage and enhance mobile network services in Cox’s Bazar through phased investments.

Deputy Commissioner Abdul Mannan presided over the programme, which was attended by civil society members, stakeholders and officials from various departments.

Later, minister and adviser held meetings with officials from key telecom and digital service agencies and inspected free Wi-Fi facilities at Cox’s Bazar Airport and railway station, reviewing service quality and user experience.
