World leaders gather in Delhi for 18th BRICS summit amid wars

World leaders are gathering in the Indian capital of New Delhi for the 18th BRICS Summit, taking place over two days against the backdrop of heightened global tensions surrounding conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
Stringent security arrangements have been implemented across New Delhi, with welcome posters featuring Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeting international delegates lining major thoroughfares alongside temporary traffic diversions.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in Delhi for the meeting of the 11-member bloc. Discussions are expected to focus on member state perspectives regarding ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as broader multilateral economic cooperation.
Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Russian President Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, with bilateral trade and the global economic fallout of active conflicts topping the agenda.
Xi Jinping Visits India After Six Years
Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in India for his first visit in six years. Bilateral relations had cooled significantly following a 2020 border clash in the Galwan Valley that resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers.
Relations between the two Asian powers have gradually thawed in recent months, marked by the phased resumption of direct commercial flights, visa processing, and high-level diplomatic exchanges. President Xi is also expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi on the sidelines of the summit.
Expanded Geopolitical Bloc
Established in 2009 to elevate the representation of major emerging economies in global governance, BRICS has expanded its footprint significantly.
The bloc now includes Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates - countries holding distinct diplomatic stances regarding ongoing Middle Eastern conflicts involving the US and Israel.
Holding the BRICS presidency for 2026, India has invited leaders from member nations alongside several outreach invitees and international delegates.
In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed leaders will exchange views on strengthening shared priorities and addressing key regional and global developments.
High-Level Security Grid in New Delhi
Delhi Police have placed the capital under a high security alert, deploying approximately 15,000 police personnel alongside 200 companies of paramilitary forces.
The main summit events are hosted at the Bharat Mandapam complex.
Delhi Traffic Police confirmed that while the city will not face a complete lockdown, rolling traffic diversions and temporary restrictions will be enforced dynamically during VIP motorcade movements.
Surveillance across key transit routes, luxury hotels, and venue precincts is backed by over 500 high-definition CCTV cameras equipped with facial recognition and automated number-plate recognition technologies, monitored 24/7 from a central command center.
