Rainfall triggers vegetable price surge in Dhk kitchen mkt

Continuous rainfall over the past few days has disrupted the supply chain, triggering a fresh price hike for vegetables across retail markets in the capital.

Visiting various kitchen markets in the city on Friday (September 11), sellers were seen offering round brinjals at the highest rate of Tk 140 per kg, while yardlong beans reached Tk 120 per kg. Papaya remained the cheapest item on the market, retailing at Tk 30 per kg.

Market rates show pointed gourd selling at Tk 80 per kg, sponge gourd, ridge gourd, and snake gourd at Tk 80 per kg, and long brinjal at Tk 100 per kg.

Bitter gourd, cucumber, and tomatoes are selling at Tk 80 to Tk 100 per kg. Carrots are priced at Tk 140 per kg, with taro root and sweet pumpkin both going for Tk 60 per kg. Green chillies reached Tk 160 per kg, okra Tk 60 per kg, bottle gourds Tk 60 to Tk 70 per piece, and green bananas Tk 40 per four pieces.

Retailers cited supply shortages from wholesale hubs due to inclement weather. Tofazzal Hossain, a vendor at Rampura market, noted that prices surged at the wholesale level following recent rains, adding that rates should stabilize once the weather normalizes.
