Ex-law minister Shafique Ahmed passes away

Former law minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed has passed away at the age of 89 while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka.

He breathed his last around 5:30 PM on Sunday at Bangladesh Medical College Hospital, according to Supreme Court senior lawyer ABM Altaf Hossain. 

He had been admitted to the hospital a day earlier.

Shafique Ahmed is survived by two sons and a daughter.

He served as the country’s law minister from January 2009 to mid-January 2014 during Awami League government, holding the position as a technocrat minister.

Apart from his ministerial role, he also held key positions in the legal profession, including president of Supreme Court Bar Association and vice-chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council.
