Corruption allegations cloud DU transcript office probe

Allegations of irregularities and bribery at transcript branch of University of Dhaka (DU) have raised serious concerns, with reports claiming that officials allegedly extort Tk 10,000 to 15,000 daily from students seeking services.

Although an investigation committee was formed two months ago, no report has been made public and the officials accused in the allegations reportedly remain in their positions.

The controversy emerged on January 13 at Office of the Controller of Examinations when a temporary staff member, Shamsunnahar, was caught red-handed by proctorial teams after allegedly demanding Tk 5,000 from a medical student, Mehzabin Suravi, for issuing an urgent certificate.

In her statement, Shamsunnahar claimed she was part of a larger network and alleged that the operation was led by chief assistant Masud Karim.

However, Masud Karim has denied the allegations, stating, “I am being framed.”

University authorities have yet to take decisive public action. Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Sayema Haque Bidisha said she had instructed the registrar to follow up on the matter, while Registrar Munshi Shams Uddin Ahmed stated that details would be provided soon.

Meanwhile, DUCSU Vice President Abu Shadik Kayem said he is awaiting the Vice-Chancellor’s return from China for further updates on the investigation.
