MUNSHIGANJ, Apr 16: No deaths from measles have been reported in Munshiganj, health officials said, as authorities continue vaccination and monitoring efforts to keep the situation under control.

A total of 24 patients received treatment for measles at the 250-bed Munshiganj General Hospital over the past week. Of them, three were referred to other facilities, while five are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. The remaining patients have recovered and returned home after receiving care.

Dr Dewan Nizam Uddin Helal, Senior Consultant (Paediatrics) at the hospital, told The Daily Observer that measles is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads rapidly. "We have taken all necessary preparations to manage measles patients," he said.

A dedicated ward has been set up in the children's unit to treat measles cases, and capacity can be expanded if needed. "Patients are being monitored round the clock," he added.

He also noted that a control room has been established in the district to oversee the situation. Suspected cases are being treated daily through both outpatient and inpatient services.

As part of preventive measures, vaccination campaigns are ongoing in areas considered vulnerable. Children aged between six months and five years are being administered measles vaccines regularly to curb the spread of the disease.

"There is no reason to panic at this stage. Awareness remains the most effective way to prevent measles," Dr Helal said.

He urged parents and guardians to seek medical advice immediately if children show symptoms such as high fever, cough, runny nose, skin rashes, or red eyes.

Health officials said continued vigilance and public awareness would be a key to keeping the district free from any major outbreak.
