Two DU students accused of mugging at Suhrawardy Udyan

Two expelled students of Dhaka University (DU) have been accused of impersonating journalist and mugging and harassing a female student at Suhrawardy Udyan. 

This incident took place on Friday night near Ramna Kali Mandir pond, where the suspects allegedly surrounded the victim, accessed her personal data, and extorted money after falsely identifying themselves as members of a university journalists' group. 

The DU authorities confirmed this matter. 

Primary suspects, Shahriar Tanzil and Shahriar Islam Tushar, were previously suspended from the university on March 10 for six months following a separate assault on three individuals.

On Friday, at about 10:30pm, the victim was sitting near the Ramna Kali Mandir pond. 

A group of men surrounded her, with one individual falsely claiming to be a member of the Dhaka University Journalists' Association (DUJA). Suspects reportedly seized her phone, accessed private social media data, and demanded money. The group took Tk 1,000 from the victim and Tk 600 from her friend.

The victim, a student of Dhaka Art College, said, "They insulted me by making offensive comments about my character and scrutinized my personal information".

Tanzil, a former joint convenor of Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal's (JCD) Sir A F Rahaman Hall unit who was expelled for life from the organization in last February this year, initially denied his involvement.
