4 of family killed over land dispute 

 
NAOGAON, April, 21: A brutal killing of four members of a family, including two children, in a remote village in Niamatpur upazila has raised suspicions of a land dispute, according to relatives, while a chilling message found on a wall has further deepened the mystery.

The victims were identified as Habibur Rahman, 32, his wife Sultana Poppy, 25, and their children Parvez, 9, and Sadia Rahman, 3.

Police have detained Habibur's father, two sisters and a nephew for questioning, though officials said no conclusions have yet been reached.

Naogaon Superintendent of Police Tarikul Islam said on Tuesday that investigators were hopeful of solving the case soon. The killings have shocked Bahadurpur village, where grieving relatives and neighbours have gathered in mourning.

Police said Habibur's father Nomir Hossain first noticed blood seeping from beneath the doors of two rooms and raised the alarm. Locals later found Habibur in one room and his wife and children in another, all with their throats slit.

Law enforcement recovered the bodies and launched a full investigation. Members of the Detective Branch and CID also visited the scene.

Locals said Nomir had recently registered around 10 bighas (about 1.33 hectares) of homestead land in his only son's name, while his five daughters received 10 kathas each (about 0.06 hectares), a distribution that allegedly triggered a long-standing family dispute.

Poppy's uncle Abul Kalam Azad said there had been ongoing conflict over the land among siblings and that mediation attempts had failed. He also alleged a previous attempt to poison the family, while relatives claimed they had faced sustained harassment over the dispute.

Poppy's mother, Sabina Begum, demanded justice and questioned why Nomir survived while four members of the family were killed. Her father Moazzem Hossain also called for exemplary punishment for those responsible.

A message scrawled on a wall at the scene read: "Nomir, you survived - give the deed. Now your turn will come."

Neighbours, however, also suggested robbery as a possible motive, noting that Habibur had recently returned home with around Tk 2.8 lakh after selling cattle. Police said the exact motive will be confirmed after the investigation is complete.
