Husband sentenced to death for killing wife in Dhaka

A Dhaka court on Sunday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife over dowry demands more than 14 years ago.

Judge Munshi Md. Mashiur Rahman of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 convicted Syed Ahmed and also fined him Tk 200,000. 

The court ordered that the fine be recovered by selling his assets and handed over to the victim’s son.

Syed was present in court when the verdict was delivered and was later sent to jail.

According to the case details, Syed married Rehana Begum on June 25, 2010. He allegedly subjected her to repeated abuse, demanding dowry and pressuring her to transfer a house into his name.

On September 29, 2012, Rehana was found dead at her residence in the capital's Kamrangirchar. Her family alleged that she had been physically assaulted over dowry demands. She was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and buried shortly afterward.

Rehana’s mother later filed a case with the tribunal after police initially refused to register it. 

Following an investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department, Syed was formally charged, while allegations against his brother were not substantiated.

The tribunal recorded testimonies from 11 witnesses before delivering the verdict.
