Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, and Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam Swapan has said the government is working to transform the postal department into an effective platform for social and economic development.

He made these remarks on Saturday morning while exchanging greetings with leaders of the Bangladesh Postal Employees Union at his residence in Mahishmara area of Madhupur upazila in Tangail.

The minister said the postal department is not only a medium of communication but also one of the oldest and most trusted social institutions in the country. With its extensive network, the department can deliver services to people in remote areas, he added.

He said post offices should no longer remain limited to letter delivery but be developed as a means of development and financial inclusion. The government is working to modernise the postal system and integrate it into the mainstream of socio-economic activities, he added.

During the meeting, the postal employees’ delegation greeted the minister with flowers and presented a memorandum featuring the postal department’s monogram.

The delegation raised several demands, including nationalisation of jobs, preparation of voter lists for CBA elections, construction of permanent buildings for branch post offices and promotion-related issues.

Later, the minister inaugurated the foundation stones of a four-storey academic building of Soya High School under Musuddi union of Dhanbari upazila and a four-storey building of Ispinjarpur Dakhil Madrasa under Bolibhadra union.

In the afternoon, he also inaugurated a 1,500-metre canal re-excavation project at Rajarhat area of Birtara in Dhanbari as part of the government’s nationwide canal restoration programme.

Local BNP leaders, public representatives and officials were present at the programme.
