Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator and freedom fighter Md. Abdus Salam has said that the rehabilitation of hawkers is being carried out in an organized manner while ensuring uninterrupted pedestrian and vehicular movement.
He made the remarks on Saturday while speaking as the chief guest at the foundation stone-laying ceremony for a road development project in the Haque Residential Society area under DSCC Zone-2.
The project, financed by DSCC's own funds, involves the development of around 1.1 kilometers of roads, including pipe drains along lanes and by-lanes, at an estimated cost of Tk 36.7 million.
Speaking at the event, the DSCC administrator said the current government believes in practical work and that the Prime Minister is personally monitoring the overall activities of city corporations closely.
He added that local civic problems and ongoing development projects would be implemented in coordination with the respective Members of Parliament.
Referring to footpath management, Abdus Salam said that in the past, uncontrolled occupation of roads and footpaths by hawkers caused public suffering and disorder. "From now on, a fixed number of hawkers will be allowed to sit at designated places on footpaths or roads for a specified period. We are working to rehabilitate hawkers in a disciplined manner while ensuring smooth movement for pedestrians and vehicles," he said.
Speaking as a special guest, State Minister for Railways and the Road Transport and Highways Division Habibur Rashid Habib expressed optimism that DSCC would fulfill public expectations under the new government with its highest level of commitment and capability.
