Bangladesh Embassy in Athens has initiated the burial of an undocumented Bangladeshi national, Kamran Delwar Hossain Khan, in Greece after failing to locate any relatives in Bangladesh.
Khan passed away while in custody at the Korydallos Prison on March 14.
According to a press release from the embassy, the deceased did not possess a passport, National ID card, birth certificate or any official documents to formally prove his citizenship. However, based on Greek records identifying him as a Bangladeshi national, the embassy intervened on humanitarian grounds.
Initial investigations traced his ancestral roots to the Shariatpur district, but no immediate family members were found residing there.
Subsequently, a brother living in another country contacted the embassy, confirming that, they no longer have relatives in Bangladesh. He requested that the body not be repatriated and instead be buried in Greece, providing a formal No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the local burial.
The embassy clarified that while the government is typically only obligated to assist with the repatriation of documented workers, this case is being handled as a special humanitarian gesture.
Under current regulations, there is no specific budget allocated for overseas burials; however, the embassy is coordinating the logistics and costs through its own management.
The burial is scheduled to take place on May 7 in the Komotini area of the Thessaloniki region, which houses a Muslim cemetery.
The process is being finalized in coordination with Greek municipal authorities to ensure the funeral follows Islamic religious rites.
