With the drums of regional rivalry beginning to beat louder, Bangladesh have unveiled their 23-member squad and fixtures for the forthcoming SAFF Women's Championship 2026, set to be staged in Goa, India from 25 May to 6 June. The tournament will be held at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru (PJN) Stadium.
Drawn in Group B alongside hosts India and Maldives, Bangladesh face a stern examination of their credentials. The group-stage journey begins on 28 May against Maldives before a high-stakes encounter with India on 31 May under the floodlights. Only the top two sides from each groups progress to the semi-finals, leaving little margin for error as every pass, every tackle, every moment poised to carry decisive weight.
At the heart of Bangladesh's campaign stands captain Afida Khandaker, entrusted with steering the ship through choppy waters. Between the sticks, Rupna Chakma remains a dependable last line of defence, while the backline features the experienced Swarna Rani Mondal and Halima Akter. The midfield engine room, expected to dictate tempo and rhythm, will look towards the creativity of 'Magical Monika' Chakma and the industrious Maria Manda.
Up front, Bangladesh carry both flair and firepower. Tahura Khatun and Ritu Porna Chakma are poised to spearhead the attack, supported by a dynamic cast including Shaheda Akter Ripa and Umehla Marma. The squad blends youthful exuberance with battle-hardened resilience, a combination that often proves decisive in tournament football.
The road to the final, scheduled for 6 June, will demand not only technical precision but also mental fortitude. In tournament football, as the old adage goes, it is not merely about how one starts, but how one endures the distance. Bangladesh, buoyed by recent strides in women's football, will be eager to turn promise into podium.
The question now lingers in the humid evening air, can Bangladesh rise to the occasion and script another chapter of glory in South Asian football?
