The 165th birth anniversary of Nobel laureate and world poet Rabindranath Tagore was celebrated at the University of Dhaka on Friday with a discussion session and cultural programme.
The event was held at the university's RC Majumdar Arts Auditorium, bringing together teachers, students and cultural activists to reflect on Tagore's enduring legacy.
The programme was attended by Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane as the chief guest, while Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. Abdus Salam chaired the session. Professor Sirajul Islam (Siraj Saleheen), Chair of the Bengali Department, presented the keynote paper.
Speakers at the event said Tagore elevated Bengali language, literature and culture to global recognition through his vast literary contributions, including poetry, songs, novels, essays and plays.
They noted that his works continue to embody messages of humanism, non-communal harmony, peace, and liberation, which remain highly relevant in today's social context.
"Rabindranath Tagore's literature continues to illuminate society even today," said Professor Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane, adding that following his ideals is essential for the present time.
Professor Dr. Abdus Salam said Tagore's educational philosophy can play a significant role in shaping a new generation of humane, creative and socially responsible citizens.
Speakers also emphasized that Tagore's philosophy of tolerance and universal human values could help address contemporary challenges such as division, intolerance, and violence in society.
They said regular engagement with Tagore's works in academic and cultural spaces is necessary to foster critical thinking and cultural awareness among young people.
Following the discussion, a cultural programme was jointly presented by the university's Department of Music and Department of Dance.
The performance featured Tagore songs and dance interpretations inspired by his literary works, drawing appreciation from attendees and celebrating the poet's artistic legacy.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment from the university community to preserve and promote Tagore's contributions to literature, education, and cultural identity.
