Prime Minister (PM) Tarique Rahman has called on police to play a more effective role in curbing mob violence, juvenile gangs and the spread of narcotics, stressing that restoring public confidence and improving law and order are among the government’s top priorities.
In a message marking National Police Week 2026, which begins Sunday with a four-day nationwide program, the prime minister said ensuring public safety at home and abroad is essential to achieving the government’s broader development goals.
“The current government is implementing comprehensive programs to build a prosperous, self-reliant, just, democratic and humane state,” Tarique said. “But without a sense of security and comfort among citizens, that goal will be difficult to attain.”
He underscored that police have no alternative in maintaining law and order, preventing crime and protecting lives and property. However, he noted that building trust and confidence with the public would make it easier for officers to carry out their duties effectively.
Tarique said a democratic government had been established through a free, fair and neutral election after more than a decade and a half, bringing renewed peace and relief among citizens. People now expect a society free from enforced disappearances, abductions and a culture of fear, he said, adding that law enforcement agencies play the most critical role in maintaining such an environment.
Describing the Bangladesh Police as vital in the current context, the prime minister said the force has demonstrated professionalism and dedication during national crises and key events, including the recent parliamentary elections. He added that police have proven capable of performing their responsibilities efficiently when provided with a supportive environment.
Tarique also highlighted the force’s achievements on the international stage, particularly its contributions to United Nations peacekeeping missions, which have enhanced Bangladesh’s global standing. However, he said modernization and capacity building are essential in light of evolving global realities.
The prime minister emphasized that improvements in law enforcement are closely linked to national development and crime control. For that reason, he said, the government considers investment in police development an integral part of ensuring public safety.
To sustain democratic progress, Tarique said, maintaining a stable law and order situation is imperative. He specifically urged police to intensify efforts to prevent mob violence, juvenile delinquency and drug trafficking.
Calling for a professional and accountable police force to safeguard state stability and public trust, the prime minister said Police Week should serve as a renewed commitment to becoming a trusted institution for the people.
He extended his greetings and congratulations to all serving and retired members of the Bangladesh Police on the occasion and expressed hope for the force’s continued success and advancement.
