Heavy rain triggers flood alert in north and south Bangladesh

Rising river water levels driven by monsoon rains have sparked concerns of short-term flooding across the north-eastern, northern, north-western, and south-eastern regions of the country.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) reported on Wednesday that three water level stations along two major rivers are currently operating above their respective danger thresholds.

According to the latest bulletin, the Kushiyara River is flowing 2 cm above the danger mark at Markuli in Sunamganj and 35 cm above at Fenchuganj in Sylhet.

Meanwhile, the Someswari River at Kalmakanda in Netrokona is flowing 5 cm above its danger level. Conversely, the Surma River at Chhatak station receded below the danger mark over the past 24 hours.

Out of 127 water level monitoring stations tracked nationwide, 75 recorded an increase in water levels, 46 observed a decrease, and 6 remained unchanged.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall across Chittagong and Barisal divisions over the next 24 to 48 hours. Active monsoon conditions are expected to sustain rainfall over the coming days. During the last 24 hours, the highest rainfall was recorded in Brahmanbaria at 65 mm, followed by Haridaspur at 58 mm and Jaflong at 52 mm.

Hydrological forecasts indicate that the Surma and Kushiyara rivers may continue to rise for another day, potentially deteriorating conditions or causing fresh short-term flooding in low-lying areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj.

Concurrently, water levels in the Yamuna, Ganges, and Padma rivers are on an upward trend. Low-lying areas in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogra, Sirajganj, and Tangail face potential temporary inundation over the next 24 to 72 hours. Water levels in the Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar rivers may also reach caution thresholds at select points in Kurigram and Gaibandha.

Rising waters in the Atrai River could trigger brief localized flooding in the low-lying zones of Naogaon within 24 to 48 hours. In the south-east, rapid rises in the Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers risk temporarily submerging riverbank settlements in Bandarban, Cox's Bazar, and Chittagong.

However, conditions are expected to improve in Netrokona over the next three days as the Someswari River continues its receding trend.
