Calls have intensified for the publication of a white paper on the activities of the interim government led by Dr Muhammad Yunus, with analysts arguing that such a document is necessary to ensure transparency, accountability, and an evidence based assessment of governance over the past 18 months.
Eminent journalist Anis Alamgir told The Daily Observer, "He (Dr. Muhammad Yunus) formed a committee to uncover what happened in each sector and ministry during Sheikh Hasina's tenure, and they have also given a report. Such a committee should be formed by the current government to find out what happened in 18 months of interim government, including corruption in various sectors."
He stressed that the proposed body must be impartial. "It will be an independent body that will look at these things impartially. Because even in this government, Yunus' people remain who will try to save him. That is why a white paper for each ministry will be published by neutral people," he added.
Anis argued that such a document would clarify competing narratives. "When the white paper is published, it will be known who were corrupt. A comparative picture will be obtained of what Sheikh Hasina's government left behind and what they did" he said.
Referring to recent public health concerns, he added, "Today, there is so much talk about measles vaccination. If the white paper is published, it will be known who was actually involved, was it Yunus himself or his health adviser"
"The government may not be giving importance to it, but when there is public demand, it will have to be given importance. By publishing this white paper, the government will also prove its courage," he added.
