Indian couple held while crossing into Bangladesh

An Indian couple was arrested by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) early Friday while entering Bangladesh illegally through Barlekha border in Moulvibazar district. 

The couple was arrested around 6:30 am on Friday from Gandhai area under Dakshin Shahbazpur union of Barlekha upazila. 

BGB members also recovered Indian identification documents and mobile phones from their possession.

The detainees were identified as Kamrul Ahmed, 32 and his wife Husna Begum Laskar, 24.

According to BGB sources, Kamrul Ahmed illegally entered India through the Benapole border in Jashore with the help of human traffickers in 2014. He later obtained Indian citizenship in 2015.

Authorities said Kamrul subsequently married Husna Begum Laskar, from Lala village in Hailakandi district of India.

During primary interrogation, the couple admitted to crossing the border illegally into Bangladesh and legal action against them is currently underway, BGB officials said.

Barlekha Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Md. Moniruzzaman Khan said BGB had handed the detainees over to the police station.

“We are verifying their identities and other information. BGB is preparing the formal complaint, and necessary legal action will be taken after a case is filed,” the OC said.
