Makeshift cattle markets on roads won’t be allowed: Khulna DC

KHULNA, May 17: Khulna Deputy Commissioner (DC) Hoore Jannat on Sunday said no makeshift cattle market would be allowed on roads ahead of the upcoming holy Eid-ul-Azha to avoid traffic congestion and public suffering.

She issued the directive while presiding over the monthly meeting of the district development coordination meeting at her conference room here on Sunday.

The DC also instructed UNOs to ensure that vehicles carrying sacrificial animals do not create traffic jams around cattle markets.

She asked the Health Department to keep sufficient stocks of rabies and measles vaccines.

Highlighting water management issues, Hoore Jannat said river dredging and canal excavation works must be given priority and warned against any manipulation in submitting progress reports on canal excavation activities.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr Md Mizanur Rahman said the measles vaccination target for children has already been achieved and the vaccination campaign is still continuing.

District Livestock Officer Dr Md Shariful Islam informed the meeting that Khulna District has 1, 63,229 sacrificial animals available against a demand of 1, 54,456 ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, leaving a surplus of 8,773 animals.

He said a total of 25 permanent and temporary cattle markets would operate in the district this year, while 31 veterinary medical teams have been kept ready to provide services at the markets.

The deputy director of the Islamic Foundation said the process of providing honorariums to imams, muezzins, khadems, priests, sebayets and heads and deputy heads of Buddhist monasteries is underway.

Additional DC (General) Bitan Kumar Mondal, officials of different government departments and members of the committee were present at the meeting.
