Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman on Monday described the incident involving Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) leader Nasiruddin Patwary in Jhenaidah as “not decent,” saying disrespectful behaviour towards any individual is undesirable despite political differences.

He made these remarks while speaking to journalists after an exchange meeting with local BNP leaders at Chuadanga Circuit House.

Referring to the recent attack on NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, the minister said both BNP and NCP were viewing the matter politically.

“The incident involving NCP in Jhenaidah is being viewed politically by both NCP and BNP. However, the behaviour shown towards Nasiruddin Patwary is something nobody expects and it was not decent,” he said.

The minister also spoke about government initiatives to ensure speedy trial in cases related to violence against women and children.

He said the government had consulted the Supreme Court to keep Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunals operational during the Eid holidays.

“The Supreme Court has decided that these courts will remain open so that cases involving violence against women and children can proceed without delay,” he added.

Mentioning the Ramisa murder case, the minister said the accused gave confessional statements within 24 hours of the incident and the charge sheet was submitted within one week.

“The trial of the Ramisa murder case will begin on June 1. The judicial process has already advanced and we hope the trial will be completed within a short time,” he said.

According to reports, Nasiruddin Patwary came under attack and was allegedly pelted with eggs after Friday prayers at the Old Collectorate Jame Mosque in Jhenaidah town on Friday afternoon.

At least five individuals, including Patwary and activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, were reportedly injured in the incident, which later triggered tensions in the town.

Later that night, NCP leader Tareq Reza filed a case naming eight people, including the president and general secretary of Jhenaidah district Chhatra Dal, along with 110-115 unnamed accused.

In a counter case filed the following day by former district Chhatra Dal vice-president Md Enamul Kabir, NCP joint member secretary Tareq Reza was arrested on Sunday evening and released on bail on Monday morning.

The exchange meeting at the circuit house was chaired by Chuadanga district BNP General Secretary Sharifuzzaman and attended by local BNP and affiliated organisation leaders.

Later, the law minister attended the closing ceremony of a three-day programme marking the 127th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at Karpasdanga in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga.

Before the programme, he paid tribute to the poet by placing flowers at a memorial monument beside the historic Atchala house associated with Nazrul’s memory.
