Water levels in the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers have risen significantly over the past 24 hours and are likely to continue increasing over the next three days, raising fears of short-term flooding in several districts of Rangpur Division, according to the bulletin of Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).
Besides, the water levels of the Surma and Kushiyara rivers in the north-eastern region have increased and may continue to rise over the next 3 days, reports UNB.
During this period, these rivers may flow above the danger level in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts, and a short-term flood situation may develop in adjacent low-lying areas.
All major rivers in the country are flowing below their danger levels. However, the Teesta River is flowing at the warning level at the Dalia (Nilphamari), Kaunia (Rangpur) and Tarapur (Gaibandha) stations, the Surma River is flowing at the warning level at the Kanaighat (Sylhet), Chhatak (Sunamganj), and Sunamganj (Sunamganj) stations, the Kushiyara River is flowing at the warning level at the Fenchuganj (Sylhet) station and the Someshwari River is flowing at the Warning Level at Kalmakanda (Netrokona) station.
During the last 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rainfall was recorded at some locations in Chattogram Division, while moderate-heavy to heavy rainfall was observed in Rangpur and Sylhet Divisions. Upstream, very heavy rainfall was recorded in the Indian states of Meghalaya, West Bengal, and Arunachal Pradesh.
According to information from meteorological agencies, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast over Rangpur, Sylhet, and Mymensingh divisions and the adjoining upstream regions of West Bengal, Assam, and Meghalaya in India during the next 03 days, followed by moderate-heavy to heavy rainfall during the subsequent 02 days.
The water level of the Brahmaputra River has increased, while the water level of the Jamuna River has remained stable. The water levels of these rivers may continue to rise over the next 05 days; however, they may remain below the danger level.
Besides, the water level of the Ganges River has increased, which may continue for the next 02 days and remain stable during the following 03 days. On the other hand, the water level of the Padma River has remained stable, which may continue for the next 2 days and then increase during the following 3 days; however, both rivers may remain below the danger level.
Meanwhile, the water levels of the Someshwari, Jinjiram, and Bhugai rivers in the north-eastern part of Mymensingh Division have decreased, while the water level of the Kangsha River has increased. The water levels of these rivers may increase over the next 3 days. During this period, these rivers may flow around the warning level in Netrokona, Mymensingh, and Sherpur districts, and adjacent low-lying areas may be temporarily inundated at some locations.
The water levels of the Sarigowain and Jadukata rivers in the northeastern part of Sylhet Division have increased, while the water levels of the Manu, Dhalai, and Khowai rivers have decreased. However, these rivers may increase again over the next 3 days.
The water levels of the Muhuri and Halda rivers in the eastern and south-eastern parts of Chattogram Division have decreased, while the water levels of the Feni, Halda, Sangu, Matamuhuri, Selonia, and Gomti rivers have remained stable. The water levels of these rivers may rise rapidly over the next three days.
