The state will push for the highest possible penalty for the individual accused of raping and killing young Ramisa Akter, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman confirmed on Sunday.

Speaking ahead of the trial's commencement on Monday, the minister expressed confidence that the evidence gathered would lead to a conviction and the maximum sentence. "We anticipate that the strength of the evidence will ensure the ultimate punishment for the perpetrator," he stated during a financial assistance ceremony at the Shailkupa Upazila Parishad auditorium in Jhenaidah.

Beyond the judicial update, the minister addressed several key national and social issues. Regarding the proposed constitutional amendment committee, Asaduzzaman noted that the government had invited five representatives from the opposition party to participate. The opposition has yet to name its members, and the government is currently awaiting their formal response.

The minister also issued a stern warning against narcotics, describing drug abuse as a threat to the fabric of society. He called for a unified national front against the trade, asserting that the administration would maintain a "zero tolerance" policy with no room for compromise.

Highlighting the government's social safety net initiatives, Asaduzzaman announced that "family cards" would be distributed to 40 million households nationwide. This follows the successful introduction of farmer cards in various regions, a programme slated for a full national rollout.

Additionally, the minister revealed plans to provide state allowances to religious leaders, including imams and temple priests.

The event, organized by the Jhenaidah Zila Parishad, was presided over by Administrator M A Majid. Other notable attendees included Deputy Commissioner Md Noman Hossain, local BNP leaders, and senior police officials.
