A father and son have died when a pickup van struck their motorcycle near the Shah Amanat Bridge in Chattogram.

The dead are 75-year-old Durgapada Mallick and his son Bidhan Mallick, 42, a science teacher at Daulatpur Bahumukhi High School in Karnaphuli Upazila. They were from Singhara village in Anwara Upazila.

Police said the accident occurred around 8am on Tuesday when a vegetable-laden pickup hit the motorcycle from behind, killing one of them on the spot.

Bidhan was rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His father's body was also later brought to the hospital.

Karnaphuli Police Station SI Mahin Sarwar said the pickup van has been seized.

Relative Pintu Das said Bidhan was taking his father home to Singhara village when the crash occurred.

He is survived by two daughters and a son.
