BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir warned on Friday that while the 2024 mass uprising opened a path for Bangladesh to return to democracy, a "planned initiative" is now visible to disrupt that very process.

He claimed that democracy is facing a new crisis as deliberate attempts are being made to incite anarchy across the country.

Speaking at a discussion program at the National Press Club, Mirza Fakhrul highlighted the negative impact of social media on the current political climate.

He alleged that systematic character assassination is being carried out against political leaders to portray them negatively to the public. "A conspiracy is underway to destroy politics, which is an ominous sign for a healthy political culture," he stated.

The BNP leader noted that conspirators are using language designed to damage political etiquette and regular democratic norms. He remarked that since July 2024, certain political forces have become active in obstructing the practice of democracy.

While he acknowledged the formation of the current government through democratic elections as a positive step, he urged the administration to swiftly identify these conspiracies to ensure democratic progress continues.

Defining the party's stance, Mirza Fakhrul said, "BNP is a liberal democratic party, not a revolutionary one. Our political path is to achieve goals through mass movements and take state responsibility through elections."

At the same event, BNP Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu echoed these concerns, calling out the "indecent language and rumors" being spread against party leaders on social media.

He urged activists to remain vigilant, asserting that despite various challenges and propaganda, the public remains supportive of both the BNP and the current government.

The program was organized to mark the 52nd death anniversary of Mahbubul Haq, a member of the 1962 National Assembly, and the 12th death anniversary of former Krishak Dal President Mahbubul Alam Tara.

Senior leaders from the BNP and its affiliate organizations were in attendance.
