PAIKGACHHA, KHULNA, June 6: A poultry farm operating in a densely populated residential area of North Solua under Haridhali Union in Paikgachha Upazila of Khulna has triggered renewed controversy, with residents raising allegations of health hazards, environmental pollution and intimidation of a complainant.
Locals say the farm has been emitting a persistent foul odour for a long time, while improper disposal of poultry waste has worsened environmental conditions in the area. They also report a rise in mosquito and fly infestation, adding to the suffering of children, the elderly and people with respiratory illnesses.
Residents further allege that the accumulation of poultry droppings and lack of proper waste management have created a serious public health risk in the locality.
In response to the complaints, local resident Ramprasad Karmakar recently submitted a written complaint to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Paikgachha, highlighting the environmental and health concerns caused by the farm. Following the complaint, the upazila administration ordered an investigation and assigned the Upazila Sanitary and Food Safety Officer to take necessary steps.
Subsequently, Sanitary Officer Uday Mandal visited the site and verified the allegations during inspection.
However, Ramprasad Karmakar has alleged that after the investigation began, he has been subjected to threats and intimidation from individuals associated with the farm. He claimed that he was warned of physical assault and harassment over his complaint and was also told that damage to the farm could be falsely attributed to him.
He said he and his family now feel insecure and are considering filing a general diary (GD) with the local police station.
Local residents have demanded a proper investigation into both the environmental impact of the poultry farm and the allegations of intimidation, urging authorities to take appropriate action.
They have also questioned whether a public-interest complaint will be properly addressed or whether the complainant will continue to face pressure and threats, as concern grows in the North Solua area.
