DHOBAURA, MYMENSINGH, June 8: A bailey bridge over the Kangsha River at Goatal area in Dhoubaura Upazila collapsed into the river on Sunday morning after a sand-laden truck exerted excessive pressure on it, bringing traffic on the Dhobaura"Tarakanda regional road to a complete halt.

The incident has caused severe suffering for passengers and local residents as road communication remains fully suspended.

According to witnesses, the accident occurred when a sand-carrying truck was crossing the bridge in the morning. The middle portion of the structure suddenly gave way, causing the vehicle to become stuck in the collapsed section. No casualties were reported.

Local sources said the bridge had long been in a vulnerable condition due to the continuous movement of overloaded sand and goods-laden vehicles.

Following the collapse, hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the road, forcing commuters to take alternative routes.

Dhobaura Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mosharraf Hossain said, necessary steps are being taken to assess the situation and restore communication through alternative arrangements.

Engineer Indra Bhushan Biswas of the Dhobaura Upazila LGED said the bridge collapsed at its central portion due to the pressure of an overloaded sand truck, cutting off direct connectivity on the Dhobaura"Tarakanda road. He added that efforts are underway to restore temporary communication as quickly as possible.

The disruption of this important route has severely affected local trade, business activities, education, and daily movement of people. Residents have demanded the urgent construction of an alternative bridge or installation of a temporary Bailey bridge to restore connectivity.
