109 kilometers of barbed-wire fence is to be built to bolster security along the Myanmar border, said Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed while visiting the BGB Headquarters in Pilkhana around 3:00PM on Monday.

Minister clarified the decision while answering queries from journalists. He added, final decision on this matter is yet to be taken.

‘The Myanmar border is currently extremely vulnerable. Near-constant conflict or fighting is ongoing there between the Arakan Army and the Myanmar military. Several other rebel groups, including RSU and ARSA, are also active, frequently engaging in internal clashes. The spillover effects of these conflicts often reach Bangladeshi territory,’ the Home Minister stated.

Explaining the rationale, Salahuddin Ahmed noted, ‘Due to these factors, drug smuggling and instability persist along the border, and shellings from across the line have occasionally cost the lives of our citizens. To address all these issues, we have proposed constructing 109 kilometers of barbed-wire fencing, though a final decision has not been reached yet.’

Addressing a query, he mentioned that the security situation along the Myanmar border is entirely different from that of the India border, and the two should not be evaluated in the same manner.

Regarding the threat of landmines, the Home Minister added, ‘We have already procured necessary landmine detection equipment and handed it over to the BGB. BGB personnel are actively deploying these devices to prevent further landmine casualties.’
