Dinesh Trivedi is going to take his charge as the new High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh on Friday, June 12, 2026.

He received his Letters of Credence for the appointment as India’s next High Commissioner to Bangladesh from Indian President Droupadi Murmu on June 6, 2026, and approval from Bangladesh government as per protocol.

“We wish the people of India and Bangladesh that- together- both of us can emerge to be the strongest democracy and one of the strongest world powers together. And that is what we are going to do. And I have no doubt about it that we’ll achieve that,” said the veteran politician in Kolkata on Thursday.

He expressed optimism that both Bangladesh and India can emerge as the strongest democracy and one of the strongest world powers together, stressing that they will achieve the goal.  High Commissioner-designate Dinesh Trivedi visited Netaji Bhavan in Kolkata ahead of taking charge in Bangladesh on Thursday.

He said he is set to come to Bangladesh with a lot of energy and a lot of good wishes from not 140 crore, but 160 crore people of both the countries.
“So I’m very, very happy and I’m grateful to the Prime Minister (of India), the people of this country, for giving me such a responsibility and putting faith in me,” Dinesh Trivedi said.

Dinesh Trivedi, a veteran politician who previously served as a member of parliament from Barrackpore in West Bengal, Union Minister for Railways and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare in the cabinet of former prime minister Manmohan Singh. He has close to three decades of parliamentary experience and was awarded the “Outstanding Parliamentarian” for the 2016-17 period.
He joined BJP in 2021 after leaving the All India Trinamool Congress.
According to the Hindustan Times, Trivedi’s appointment comes as India and Bangladesh seek to stabilise ties amid tensions following the mass uprising that ousted then prime minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. It added that the Modi government’s choice of Trivedi shows it is willing to send political leaders, not just Indian Foreign Service officers, as envoys to key postings.
Hindustan Times also described the appointment as “a message of accountability to the Ministry of External Affairs’ diplomats”.
