A retired government college professor has died on Friday while receiving treatment in Dhaka, two days after he was allegedly attacked during a dispute over land ownership in Sadar Upazila of Kushtia.
Deceased Moslem Mondal, 54, was a retired professor in the Accounting Department of Kushtia Government College. He was also serving as an officer on special duty under the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education.
According to police and the deceased’s family members, the incident occurred on Wednesday night in Doctor Para area of Kamalapur under Sadar Upazila. Moslem Mondal had gone to collect mangoes from an orchard situated on land that has been the subject of a long-standing ownership dispute.
He was allegedly assaulted with locally-made weapons, sustaining serious injuries to his leg, hand, ankle and other parts of his body. Local residents then rescued him and took him to Kushtia General Hospital before he was transferred to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in Dhaka as his condition worsened.
Later on, he died at the hospital at around 6:30am on Friday.
The deceased’s family members said tensions over the disputed property had existed for years between Moslem Mondal and some of his relatives. They alleged that the attack was triggered by a disagreement over picking mangoes from the orchard.
