Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr ABM Obaidul Islam has called on young people to embrace moral and humanitarian values and take the lead in national development and social change.
He was speaking on Saturday as chief guest at the opening of the UNDP-DUDS debate competition final, themed ‘Youth Voice for Social Protection’, held at a hotel in the capital and organised by the Dhaka University Debating Society (DUDS).
Prof Dr SM Shamim Reza, moderator of DUDS, along with society president Zubayer Hossain Shahed and general secretary Rageeb Anjum, were present at the ceremony.
DU VC stressed that students should engage in co-curricular activities such as debating to grow into well-rounded individuals. Young people, he said, must take a leading role in ensuring social protection and tackling social ills, urging students to use debate as a platform to highlight inconsistencies and problems within society.
