BNP Secretary General and Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that the opposition party is trying to mislead the people on the July Charter issue. He said that BNP is committed to implementing every pledge of the July Charter and there is no room for spreading confusion on this issue.

He made these remarks while addressing the chief guest at a memorial service organized to mark the sixth death anniversary of Professor Emaz Uddin Ahmed at the Jatiya Press Club's Zahur Hossain Chowdhury Hall on Friday. The event was jointly organized by the Professor Emaz Uddin Ahmed Research Center and the National Journalists Association.

Mirza Fakhrul said that the opposition party is claiming that if the July Charter is not implemented in parliament, the decision will be made on the streets. But such statements are being made with the aim of misleading the people. He said that all the political parties that have been agitating together have signed the July Charter and the BNP has repeatedly announced that if elected, it will implement the promises of the July Charter according to the party's election manifesto.

Regarding the referendum, he said, there were no discussions with BNP on some of the proposed referendum issues. In particular, BNP never agreed with the proposal for proportional representation in the upper house. The party's position on this issue has already been clarified.

He said, "The July Charter does not mention immediate implementation anywhere; rather, it states that the elected government will implement it according to their election pledges. Just as BNP is committed to implementing the 31-point program, it is also committed to the July Charter."

Regarding the constitution, Mirza Fakhrul said, "BNP is not in favor of constitutional reform, but rather constitutional amendment. Since it was elected by the people and formed the government with a two-thirds majority, BNP has the constitutional right to implement the promises in its election manifesto."

He claimed that BNP initiated important political reforms in the country. He highlighted BNP's role in the transition from single-party rule to multi-party democracy, from presidential rule to parliamentary government, and the introduction of a caretaker government.

Criticizing the opposition parties, the BNP Secretary General said that they only want to use the July Charter as a tool to come to power. But the BNP does not want the spirit of the July mass movement to become only a tool to gain political power. In his words, the July movement of 2024 was the result of a long 18-19 year struggle against dictatorship and fascism.

Claiming that BNP made the most sacrifices in the July movement, Mirza Fakhrul said that cases have been filed against 6 million party leaders and activists, about 1,700 leaders and activists have gone missing, and several thousand leaders and activists have been killed.

He said BNP believes in liberal democracy and wants to build a truly democratic state based on national unity, not divisive politics. Stating that the country's current crisis will not go away overnight, he urged everyone to move forward with patience, tolerance and democratic values.

Former Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University Professor Anwar Ullah Chowdhury presided over the memorial service. Jahangirnagar University Vice Chancellor Professor Kamrul Ahsan, Professor Abdul Latif Masud, Jugantor Editor Poet Abdul Hai Sikder, National Press Club President Hasan Hafiz and other prominent academicians, journalists and researchers spoke at the event. At the end of the program, a special prayer was held to pray for the eternal peace of Professor Emaz Uddin Ahmed.
