United States (US) Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen on Saturday paid a courtesy call on Foreign Minister (FM) Dr Khilur Rahman at his ministry office.

The meeting took place following a press briefing at the ministry on Prime Minister (PM) Tarique Rahman's visit to China and Malaysia, which began on Saturday.

The US is among several influential countries closely following the PM’s  much-talked about visit to China and is keen to learn about its agenda.

Journalists asked Ambassador Christensen about the issues discussed, and rather than making direct political comments, he responded diplomatically by referring to the FIFA World Cup.

"The United States secured a place in the World Cup knockout stage with a great victory over Australia last night. So I came here to ask the foreign minister and all Bangladeshis to support the United States in the upcoming matches," the Ambassador maintained.

Praising Bangladeshis' passion for football, he added: "In the long run, betting on the United States will never be a mistake."
