
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said Jamaat-e-Islami is a regimented political party that does not believe in democracy, while BNP has been fighting for democratic governance for around 50 years.
He said BNP rejects one-party rule and that no one can question its commitment to democracy.
Mirza Fakhrul made the remarks after visiting the proposed Mollachar Bridge construction site in North Islampur area of Munshiganj town and paying respects at the graves of the July martyrs.
He assured local residents that construction of the long-awaited Mollachar Bridge would begin soon in response to their demands.
The BNP leader also said issues related to reopening the long-closed labour market are expected to be discussed during the Prime Minister’s upcoming visit to Malaysia. He expressed hope that the visit would further strengthen Bangladesh�"Malaysia relations.
Earlier in the day, he inaugurated the second-floor building of Bhaberchar Bazar in Gazaria. Later, he attended a meeting on infrastructure development in Munshiganj at the district Circuit House as chief guest.
Speaking at the meeting, he said the national budget has been designed to increase investment, create jobs and keep the economy moving forward. He added that priority has been given to the health and education sectors, saying progress in these areas is essential for national development.
Addressing local business leaders, he urged them to invest in their own areas. He said new industries and improved transport links would strengthen the district economy and create wider employment opportunities.
Members of Parliament from three constituencies, the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, District Council Administrator and officials from various departments were present at the programme.
