Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Saturday said the government is moving swiftly to bring back former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) following his arrest there on the basis of an Interpol Red Notice.

Speaking to reporters after presenting awards, certificates and financial honorariums to 15 police personnel at the Secretariat, the minister said the necessary legal process is progressing rapidly.

According to him, the UAE Federal Police arrested Benazir Ahmed following a request from Bangladesh through Interpol. The Federal National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abu Dhabi informed Bangladesh of the arrest via email on June 12 and subsequently sought the required documents within 30 days to proceed with legal formalities.

Salahuddin Ahmed said the Home Ministry completed, translated and sent all 144 pages of the required documents through diplomatic channels within just three days.

"The process of bringing him back is moving forward very quickly," he said, adding that the current administration has acted with efficiency in handling the matter.

The minister also said police have been placed on high alert across the country ahead of June 23, the founding anniversary of Awami League, following intelligence reports of possible attempts to create unrest and instability by a political party banned under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

He said law enforcement agencies have taken precautionary measures to prevent any sabotage and maintain public order.

Responding to a question on crime and law and order, Salahuddin Ahmed acknowledged that it is not possible to eliminate criminal activities overnight, particularly in crime-prone areas such as Mohammadpur. However, he said the government has adopted a specific action plan to gradually bring such areas under control.

The minister also highlighted the government's "Punishment and Reward" policy within the police force, saying sincere and efficient officers are being recognised, while those found negligent or involved in misconduct face swift departmental action.

During the programme, 15 police personnel were honoured for bravery, professionalism and public service in several notable incidents, including anti-crime operations, criminal investigations and efforts to ease public suffering during heavy rainfall.

Senior Home Secretary Manjur Morshed Chowdhury, IGP Md Ali Hossain Fakir and other senior officials attended the event.
