Prime minister’s first steps on the global stage

As Prime Minister Tarique Rahman commences his first overseas tour since assuming office, we believe Bangladesh stands at an important diplomatic crossroads. His six-day visit to Malaysia and China is not merely a routine foreign trip, but rather a strategic mission aimed at strengthening economic cooperation, attracting investment, and advancing Bangladesh’s long-term development goals.

However, significance of this landmark visit lies in both its timing and its scope. At a time when nations are increasingly relying on economic diplomacy to secure growth and resilience, Bangladesh’s engagement with two of Asia’s most powerful nations sends a strong message of confidence and ambition.

The Malaysia leg of the tour offers valuable opportunities to expand trade, deepen labour market cooperation, and encourage greater investment. Malaysia remains an important destination for Bangladeshi workers, and stronger bilateral ties could restore and create additional employment opportunities while improving workforce mobility. We consider Bangladesh’s efforts to seek Malaysian support for closer engagement with the ASEAN platform as a forward-looking step that could open new avenues for regional cooperation and commerce. In addition, educational collaboration, if formalised through a memorandum of understanding, would further enrich people-to-people relations.

The China visit is expected to be even more consequential. With as many as 17 bilateral instruments likely to be signed, including agreements, memorandums of understanding, an action plan, and a protocol, the visit reflects the growing maturity of Bangladesh-China relations. All these understandings have strong potential to generate benefits in infrastructure development, trade, technology transfer, and industrial investment.

Particularly significant are the planned discussions on integrated river management, including the Teesta project and the Padma Barrage initiative, since Bangladesh’s future prosperity depends heavily on effective water resource management. Prompt and efficient cooperation in these areas could well contribute to higher agricultural productivity, environmental sustainability, and climate resilience for decades to come.

At the same time, Prime Minister’s participation in the 2026 Summer Davos Forum in Dalian is another positive aspect of the tour. It will provide an international platform to showcase Bangladesh’s economic achievements and investment potentials before influential global leaders and business executives. Such exposure is invaluable for a country seeking greater foreign investment and global partnerships.

As this first foreign tour under the new government unfolds, we hope it will lay the foundation for a new chapter in Bangladesh’s relations with Malaysia and China. Provided the tours managed efficiently, the visit would undeniably strengthen bilateral ties, boost economic opportunities, enhance regional connectivity, and reinforce Bangladesh’s growing role in Asia’s diplomatic and economic landscape.

In conclusion, we also welcome the government decision to travel with a relatively small delegation compared to previous state and official visits, which reflects a focus on efficiency and substantive outcomes rather than symbolism.
