Spain warned as Saudi recall Argentina miracle

Saudi Arabia coach Giorgos Donis has reminded Spain of Argentina’s shock defeat in the 2022 World Cup, saying his team believes in creating another upset when they face the European giants in the 2026 World Cup.

Saudi Arabia will take on Spain in Atlanta on Sunday night (Bangladesh time), and ahead of the crucial Group-stage clash, the Greek coach said football has repeatedly produced unexpected results.

“Seeing miracles in football is always special. We have seen it many times in the World Cup and other tournaments, where favourites have lost against underdogs. Having a great memory like our match against Argentina is very important for us,” Donis said at the pre-match press conference.

Saudi Arabia stunned then-world champions Argentina in their opening match of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, producing one of the biggest upsets in tournament history. Donis believes that victory can inspire his side once again.

The Saudi coach also warned his players not to show excessive respect to Spain.

“We are going to play against one of the best teams in the world. It is important to enjoy playing against such opponents in a tournament like this. We must respect them, but not more than necessary,” he said.

Spain are under pressure after being held to a goalless draw by debutants Cape Verde in their opening match, while Saudi Arabia also started their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Uruguay.

Donis took charge of Saudi Arabia in April after the spells of Roberto Mancini and Hervé Renard. Under Renard, Saudi Arabia recorded their historic win over Argentina in Qatar.
