Police, in separate drives, arrested 14 leaders and activists of the Awami League (AL) and its affiliated organisations from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar and Mohammadpur areas in the capital.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Media and Public Relations Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Niaz Mehdi confirmed the information on Sunday.
He said that several leaders and activists of the AL and its affiliated bodies gathered on a road in front of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the morning. As they were preparing to bring out a procession there marking the founding anniversary of their party, police arrested six of the activists.
The arrestees are: Md Kabir Ahmed, 52, organisational secretary of Adabar Thana AL; AL activists Milon Chowar, 40, and Md Noyon Sheikh, 31; and Jubo League activists Md Ibrahim, 26, Md Rakib, 26, and Rakib, 23.
Meanwhile, eight more AL activists were detained from Mohammadpur area on the same morning, said Niaz Mehdi.
The DMP additional commissioner said that they were also taking preparations for a procession.
The eight arrested are: Md Kabir alias Humayun Kabir, 54; Md Kalam Farazi, 40; Kabir Hawlader, 48; Md Siraj, 38; Md Helal Hossain, 40; Md Ali Raj Hossain, 37; Md Swapan Mia, 40; and Murad alias Murad Matbar, 27.
