World Hydrography Day-2026 was observed across the country on Monday with various programmes organized by the Bangladesh Navy. A seminar marking the day was held at the Multipurpose Hall of BNS Dhaka, according to an ISPR press release.

Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam attended the event as the chief guest, while Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Nazmul Hassan was present as the special guest. The theme of this year's observance was "Transforming How Ocean Data is Shared."

Speakers highlighted the importance of hydrography in ensuring safe navigation, sustainable use of marine resources, blue economy growth and maritime spatial planning.

They also stressed effective management and sharing of marine data for the optimum utilization of ocean resources.

Bangladesh joined the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) in 2001 as its 70th member state. Since 1983, the Bangladesh Navy has been conducting hydrographic surveys and publishing internationally recognized nautical charts.

Bangladesh is currently serving as Chair of the North Indian Ocean Hydrographic Commission (NIOHC) for the 2025-2027 term.

The process of inducting the advanced survey and research vessel HMS Enterprise from the United Kingdom into the Bangladesh Navy is underway to further strengthen the country's hydrographic survey and marine research capabilities.
