KHULNA, June 23: Detectives of the Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) have arrested five alleged members of identified criminal gangs from different areas of Dhaka and recovered firearms and ammunition based on information obtained during interrogation.
The information was disclosed at a press briefing on Monday by the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of the Detective Branch (DB) of KMP Md Ahaduzzaman Mia.
According to police, a special drive was conducted from June 1 to June 20 as part of efforts to maintain law and order in Khulna city and to curb activities of listed criminals, armed offenders and drug traffickers amid growing public concern over criminal incidents.
Using intelligence inputs, surveillance and information technology, DB police tracked down several suspects who had been in hiding and carried out coordinated raids in different parts of Dhaka.
The arrested individuals were identified as Md Abrar Faisal alias Badin, 24, Md Al-Amin, 29, Md Tushar Sikder, 38, Md Asif, 25, and Md Sazzad Hossain Sabbir, 18.
Police said the detainees, during preliminary interrogation, admitted to being active members of various criminal groups, including the identified “B Company” gang operating in Khulna.
They are accused in multiple cases involving murder, illegal arms, narcotics and extortion, which are currently under trial.
Based on their statements and information provided during interrogation, police recovered one foreign-made pistol, one revolver and two rounds of 7.65 bore live ammunition.
The recovered firearms and ammunition have been seized and legal proceedings are underway under the relevant laws, police said.
Investigators also obtained information regarding other active criminal groups in Khulna, their associates and sources of weapons. Follow-up operations are continuing on the basis of the information gathered, police added.
Speaking at the briefing, the DB official said no armed criminal, extortionist, drug trader or listed offender would be allowed to operate in the city, adding that police operations would continue to ensure the safety and security of city residents.
