Man to die for rape, murder of child in Jhenaidah

JHENAIDAH, June 23: Judge Md Salehuzzaman of the Jhenaidah Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal sentenced a man to death and fined Tk 5 lakh on Monday noon in the child Tabassum rape and murder case in the district. 

The convict Abu Taher is the son of Rafi Uddin of Badedihi Village in Barobazar Union of Kaliganj Upazila of the district.

Public Prosecutor (PP) of the tribunal Advocate Md Akidul Islam said that on the morning of February 26, 2026, Abu Taher tempted the child to his house in Badurgachha Village of the upazila to buy chips and juice and raped her. When the child started screaming, he strangled her to death with his lungi. Later, he dumped the body inside a septic tank of the nearby Abdul Jabbar Secondary School. 

Meanwhile, the police arrested him that night from a rented house in the Kushtia town. After being arrested, the accused confessed to his crime to the police and later gave a statement in court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The investigation officer of the case and Officer-in-Charge of Kaliganj Police Station, Jellal Hossain, submitted a charge sheet to the court on June 16. After taking the testimonies of 17 witnesses, the judge declared the verdict.
